Aecom and Virgin give first glimpse of Denver Airport hyperloop

American engineering giant Aecom, Virgin Hyperloop One and the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) have released the design for the system’s first hyperloop station, which it is calling a "portal".

The suitably futuristic design is for a portal located near Denver International Airport at 72nd and Himalaya. As well as the geometric glass façade, there will be a public plaza as well as subterranean, green-roof infrastructure.

The team will now concentrate on carrying out a feasibility study to work out the best way to lay out the track from this nodal point.

There will also be a study for the Rocky Mountain Hyperloop in the wider Colorado area, based on an initial concept presented to Virgin Hyperloop One by CDOT and Aecom in 2016.

In addition to technical and economic aspects, the study will offer opportunities for groups such as local governments, businesses, and community groups to become part of the project.

Rob Lloyd, Virgin Hyperloop One’s chief executive, said: "Colorado has it all, from booming sectors in aerospace, technology and renewable energy to the Rockies’ natural splendor.

"With so many drawn to the state, hyperloop will enable efficient, fast, effortless connections that link Coloradans across city limits to work, live, and play."

Travis Boone, Aecom’s executive vice president, said: "Through our partnership with Virgin Hyperloop One and the Colorado Department of Transportation, we are defining the next generation of infrastructure and transportation systems to addresses the shifting way people and freight need to move.

"The Rocky Mountain Hyperloop showcases how we imagine, partner, and innovate to help define mobility of the future."

The Rocky Mountain Hyperloop was announced as one of the 11 possible lines for Hyperloop One in America in April 2017.
