Amnesty extended for illegal workers in Saudi Arabia

5 July

An amnesty for foreign workers in Saudi Arabia to regularise their illegal status in the country has been extended until November.

Bureaucratic delays have meant that many workers were unable to legalise their visa status by the original deadline of 3 July.

By this date all illegal workers should have obtained the correct documents or face fines, but King Abdullah has agreed to postpone the date until the end of the Islamic year, according to the official Saudi Press Agency.

Tens of thousands of people have already been deported or caught trying to leave the country, raising concerns about damage to the economy and construction project delays.
