8 April 2013

Jordan wants Aqaba to be a regional maritime hub

Aiming to turn Aqaba – Jordan’s only port, located at the northern tip of the Red Sea – into a regional maritime hub, the project is being implemented in four construction contracts, of which three have begun.

The new port is scheduled to open in 2014.

In 2006, Aqaba’s main port was relocated from the city centre to an area with deeper water, while the old port district was sold to developers to establish a mixed-use waterfront neighbourhood and business district.

"Arcadis already is present in the region for many years and has been involved earlier in the port of Aqaba," said Frank Heezen, director of ports and waterways at Arcadis, announcing the contract win on 21 March.
