Atkins to develop Puerto Rico’s airport infrastructure

Atkins has been awarded a design and planning role in the development of Puerto Rico’s airport infrastructure over the next five years. It will help the Puerto Rico Ports Authority (PRPA) plan, design and procure infrastructure projects.

Atkins’ CEO for North America, L. Joe Boyer said: "We have a long-term professional relationship with the PRPA, having designed and planned projects at 9 out of the 10 PRPA-owned airports in Puerto Rico over the last 16 years."

The PRPA first selected Atkins’ Puerto Rico-based business, Atkins Caribe, as general engineering consultant in 1997.

In 2008 Atkins helped the PRPA transform the former Roosevelt Roads Naval Station, a US Navy base, into the new, civilian José Aponte de la Torre Airport. Atkins has also completed numerous projects to help the PRPA execute its capital improvement programme.

Atkins saw its pre-tax profit rise 16.5% to approximately $192m (£114m) for the year to 31 March 2014, it announced this week.

The firm has recently been tipped to buy Parsons from Balfour Beatty and has won a $770m contract in Shanghai.
