Balfour Beatty to add 800-room hotel to Florida convention centre

The US arm of the UK’s largest construction firm, Balfour Beatty, has won a design-and-build contract for an 800-room hotel in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Balfour Beatty, together with Stantec, Nunzio Marc DeSantis Architects and Fentress Architects, will work on behalf of real estate firm Matthews Southwest to expand the Broward County Convention Centre.

The 29-storey Omni Hotel will contain 73,000 sq ft of meeting and ballroom space, an 11,000 sq ft fitness centre and 30,000 sq ft of pool decks.

Balfour Beatty says the team will use building information modelling to achieve LEED’s gold standard.

Construction is due to be completed by spring 2023.

Scott Skidelsky, head of Balfour Beatty’s Florida building operations, said: "Matthews Southwest is an expert in developing large-scale real estate projects that leave legacies of excellence for their clients and the communities they serve.

"We’ve had the privilege of serving as its construction partner on world-class projects in the past, including the Omni convention centre hotel in Dallas and a significant residential high-rise development in Miami, so we’re particularly honoured to once again be their partner in delivering this significant project for Broward County."
