Balfour Beatty and Fluor joint venture wins $1.7bn Texas highway contract

The Texas Department of Transportation has conditionally awarded a Balfour Beatty and Fluor joint venture a $1.7bn contact for the Interstate 635 LBJ East project.

Balfour Beatty has a 45% share in the joint venture with Fluor holding 55%.

Work on the project includes reconstruction and widening of 17.7km of the highway in north and east Dallas, including the I-30 interchange. The joint venture will also build service roads and work on multiple intersection improvements.

When finished, Interstate 635 will have 12 lanes in total with general-purpose lanes increasing from eight to 10, and two reconstructed tolled lanes.

The project aims to improve safety and reduce congestion for the 200,000 drivers who use the interstate each day.

Leo Quinn, Balfour Beatty Group chief executive, said: "Following the successful delivery of the Dallas Horseshoe project, and the continued delivery of the Southern Gateway project, this latest contract award from the Texas Department of Transportation demonstrates our market leading capabilities.

"With over half of Balfour Beatty’s construction revenue generated from our US operations, we continue to strengthen our business, benefiting from strong competitive positions in our chosen large and growing infrastructure markets."

The contract is expected to be finalised in autumn 2019, work is due to begin in early 2020 and is due to be completed in 2024.
