Montreal-headquartered Bombardier Transportation has been named preferred bidder to build and supply a new monorail system in Cairo, Egypt.
The plan is for two lines, one to connect East Cairo with the vast New Administrative Capital (NAC) now under construction, and the other to link 6th October City to Giza.
Bombardier said last night the system would cost €3bn. It said the potential value of the build-design contract was €1.2bn, while a 30-year operations and maintenance deal could be worth about €1.1bn.
It is good news for Derby, UK because the rolling stock for the system will be built there.
The monorail connecting East Cairo to the NAC will be 54km, while the line connecting 6th October City with Giza is 42km.
Two Egyptian construction firms, Orascom and Arab Contractors, will also work on the new system.
Earlier this year China agreed to lend Egypt $1.2bn for a railway to the NAC.
