Capita Symonds joins team bidding for Denmark-to-Germany tunnel

19 June 2013

Capita Symonds has joined the ‘Fehmarn Belt Contractors’ (FBC) design-and-build consortium which has been shortlisted by Femern A/S to tender for all four of the large civil engineering contracts for the €4.1bn Fehmarmbelt Fixed Link.

The Fehmarmbelt Link is a planned 17.6km long immersed road and rail tunnel that will join Denmark and Germany under the Baltic Sea.

The FBC consortium comprises four leading European contractors – Hochtief Solutions AG (Germany), Ed Züblin AG (Germany), Boskalis International BV (Netherlands) and Van Oord Dredging and Marine Contractors BV (Netherlands) – and the subcontractors MT Højgaard (Denmark), Volker Construction International (Netherlands) and Strukton (Netherlands).

Capita Symonds, which is providing design services to the consortium along with Danish consultant Gronmij, says it has been involved in more than 30 tunnels since the Conwy Tunnel in the 1980s.  The company’s work includes the 4km long Øresund Tunnel, upon which the conceptual design for Fehmarnbelt is based.

The contracts are expected to be awarded in 2015.
