Construction starts on Foster + Partners’ Luxembourg office development

Ground has been broken on Icône, Foster + Partners’ a 18,000 sq m office building in the town of Esch-sur-Alzette on Luxembourg’s border with France.

The architect describes the design as "contradictory", with the exterior referencing the Belval neighbourhood’s industrial heritage and the interior organised around a green atrium.

Darron Haylock, a partner in Foster + Partners, said: "The atrium is a green, light-filled space that is very much the social heart of the project, providing visual connectivity and a dynamic atmosphere for both work and play.

"Biophilia, the green landscaping, natural ventilation and visual connectivity all promoting collaboration and healthy wellbeing."

The structure is designed as two wings encasing the atrium. The interior will have a flexible layout to encourage collaboration and allow reconfiguring to meet changing needs.

Shops will be built along the Porte de France side, and cafés and restaurants will be located on the link to Place de l’Académie.

Foster + Partners worked with local architect Beiler Francois Fritsch on the design, which aims to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating, and to be WELL Building Standard certified.
