Floating “food forest” planned for New York

A Kickstarter campaign has been launched for a "public floating food forest" in New York.

The "Swale" project will be based on a barge on the Hudson River and will contain edible perennial plants.

The boat will dock at locations throughout the city and the organisers are working with community groups in each place to "establish permanent food forests on NYC’s public land".

Those behind the project say they want to "create an environment that works together to find new ideas and answers to food security".

The Swale’s plants will be able to be sampled by the public for free.

The project’s backers can donate from $5 to $5,000, in return for which they can spend a night on the boat, followed by breakfast made from foods grown onboard.

Art collective Biome Arts is planning to build a structure above the boat that can be used as an art gallery, performance space and meeting place.

Art advocacy group A Blade of Grass is co-financing the project.

Some 95 backers have so far pledged more than $6,000 of a $32,000 goal with 22 days to go.

It is unclear if the project will go ahead if it does not reach its target.

  1. Great idea! It is like a Noah’s Ark.
We need more of them. Just don’t cultivate with Monsanto seeds/fertilizer.
