Foster + Partners designs 305m-tall “Tulip” for London skyline

Planning permission has been submitted to the City of London Corporation for Foster + Partners’ "Tulip", a 305m-tall viewing platform located next to the Gherkin, another Foster project.

It will be the tallest structure in the City of London, but slightly shorter than the Shard, London’s tallest building, which is 310m tall.

Unlike the Gherkin, the Tulip will not provide office space. Rather, it will contain:

  • An education facility, offering 20,000 free places per year for London’s state school children
  • Viewing galleries at 300m
  • Sky bridges, internal glass slides and gondola pod rides located on the building’s façade
  • A pocket park and two-storey pavilion with a public rooftop garden
  • A sky bar and restaurants.

Lord Foster, the practice’s founder, said: "Continuing the pioneering design of 30 St Mary Axe [the official title of the Gherkin], the Tulip is in the spirit of London as a progressive, forward-thinking city.

"It offers significant benefits to Londoners and visitors as a cultural and social landmark with unmatched educational resources for future generations."

The client for the project would be private banking firm J Safra Group. If awarded planning permission, construction may begin in 2020 and be complete in 2025.
