Raising the roof: FCC begins the big lift at Atlético Madrid’s stadium

Spanish contractor Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas has started elevating the roof of the Wanda Metropolitano, the new stadium of Atlético Madrid Football Club.

The design by architects Antonio Cruz and Antonio Ortiz calls for a steel structure weighing around 6,300 tonnes, tensioned with radial cables bound by a membrane that occupies a surface area of 83,000 square metres.

This open tensile structure reduced the weight of the structure and provides 96% of seats with shelter from the rain

The ground has a total surface area of 145,700 square metres and a seating capacity of 67,000 distributed into stands, boxes and a VIP area. Three T-shaped blocks will bring fans closer to the football pitch.
