Grimshaw’s Morecambe Eden Project to contain giant “mussel-shell pavilions”

Grimshaw Architects has unveiled its design for the Eden Project’s second site, in the seaside town of Morecambe Bay in northwest England.

Eden Project North, which was announced in August this year, will contain a series of pavilions shaped like outsized mussels.

These mollusc pavilions will be located on Morecambe’s seafront, and will contain a variety of indoor and outdoor attractions, as well as "connecting visitors with the natural environment", according to Grimshaw.

The project will also contain "reimagined lidos, gardens, performance spaces, immersive experiences and observatories", according to a press release from the Eden Project.

The Eden Project North site was formerly occupied by the Bubbles swimming pool and the Dome theatre.

Dave Harland, Eden Project International chief executive, said: "We’re incredibly proud to present our vision for Eden Project North and hope that the people of Morecambe and the surrounding area are as excited about it as we are.

"We aim to reimagine what a seaside destination can offer, with a world-class tourist attraction that is completely in tune with its natural surroundings. Morecambe is a unique and beautiful location, perfectly situated near the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales."

The Eden Project says its site will "help the regeneration of the area socially, economically and environmentally", and that Cornwall’s Eden Project "has contributed £2bn to the local economy and welcomed more than 20 million visitors since it fully opened in 2001".

Grimshaw Architects designed the 2.2ha biomes at Eden Project’s original Cornwall development.
