Omaha-based firm HDR Architecture has been selected to design a 1,400-bed hospital for the Guilin Medical University in south central China.
The 185,800 sq m development will accommodate patients as well as teaching and research programmes.
The project’s concept is described by HDR as a "garden in a garden", and is inspired by the surrounding osmanthus, or sweet olive, trees, which have been incorporated into the hospital’s design.
HDR say the facility will provide "education and inspiration through healing gardens, therapeutic landscapes and other landscape architecture to benefit body and soul".
Hank Adams, HDR’s global director of health, said: "Guilin’s population is growing and the surrounding area is one of China’s top international tourist destinations.
"This hospital will establish a new standard of patient access and quality of care for the Guangxi Province."
Sangmin Lee, HDR’s international design principal, added: "The hospital is designed as a futuristic model that promotes medical and wellness tourism in harmony with nature. Here, a holistic health journey blends eastern and western medicine to define a path toward total health."
