Japanese consultant wins Bangladesh airport expansion

Japanese engineering consultancy Nippon Koei has won a place on a $42.1m contract relating to an major airport expansion in Dhaka, Bangladesh along with four local partners, reports Nikkei Asian Review.

Intended to boost passenger handling capacity by 50%, to 12 million people, the Japan-funded project includes the construction of a new international terminal at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (pictured), and a new cargo terminal.

The government hopes to open the new facility in August 2022.

The overall project will cost an estimated $1.8bn (192 billion yen), which will be provided by the Japanese government as yen loans.

The consortium plans to hold an auction between later this year and early next year to invite bids for the construction of the planned facilities. Construction is scheduled to start next year.
