Japanese firms win major Bangkok rail project

12 November 2013

Electronics giant Toshiba signed contracts last week with services provider Marubeni to supply equipment, rolling stock and maintenance for a new passenger railway in Bangkok.

The Purple Line, as the 23km railway is known, is due to begin operation in 2016 and is only the second mass transit scheme for the Thai capital after the Skytrain.

The use of Japanese trains is a first for Bangkok, while the ten-year maintenance contract in Thailand is a first for Japan.

Power distribution equipment and signaling and control systems are also covered in the contracts.
