Kengo Kuma designs Turkish modern art museum from wooden boxes

Japanese architect Kengo Kuma & Associates has designed a gallery of modern art that resembles a series of stacked timber boxes.

The Odunpazari Museum will be located in Eskishehr, northwest Turkey, on the site of a former wood market.

The boxes will have wooden frames that will vary in size and be placed at irregular angles.

Four will converge to create the gallery’s central atrium, with others creating exhibition spaces.

Wide gaps between timber slats will allow natural light inside the building.

The architect said: "Our design strategy is to make the volume in aggregation; stacking small boxes to create the urban scale architecture.

"Stacked boxes at the street level are read in the scale of surrounding houses and grow taller towards the centre of the museum."
