A Korean consortium has signed an $87.8m contract to deliver a 16-car train for Line 1 of the Jakarta Light Rail scheme in city, intended to reduce traffic.
The project is the first phase of a light railroad in the centre of Jakarta backed by the Jakarta regional government. The first 5.8km line will be completed in August of next year, BusinessKorea reports.
The Korean consortium consists of the Korea Rail Network Authority (business management), Daea TI (signals), Samjin (electric power), Woojin Industrial Systems (inspection) and LG CNS (screen doors).
The Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (KMLIT) announced the signing of the contract, reported to be worth 100bn won ($87.8bn), on 14 August.
Local state run construction company PT.WIKA will first build a track bed.
The Jakarta regional government plans eventually to build 110km of light railway, with seven lines, to address severe traffic problems.
The second phase project (8.9km) is being checked through a feasibility study backed by KMLIT, BusinessKorea reports. Based on the results, the consortium will make a business proposal to the Jakarta regional government by the end of this year.
