Leighton awarded $300m pipeline project in Qatar

Habtoor Leighton Group (HLG) has been awarded its fifth tranche of work on Qatar’s mega reservoir scheme. The $300m contract involves the construction of 120km of pipeline for Kahramaa, Qatar’s General Electricity and Water Corporation.

The mega reservoir project was planned by Hyder Consulting. The aim is to improve the country’s water security by creating five reservoirs connected by about 200km of large-diameter ring mains. Currently, demand for water stands at about 250 million gallons a day; this figure is expected to rise to 400 million gallons in 2022. When they are completed, the reservoirs will provide about seven days of strategic storage, and 30 days’ emergency storage.

HLG will be responsible for the supply, installation, testing and commissioning of a 1.6m-diameter iron pipeline.

José Antonio López-Monís, HLG’s chief executive, said: "Securing repeat business from key government clients demonstrates that HLG remains a preferred contractor for clients, to whom we have demonstrated our ability to deliver complex projects, safely, on time and on budget."

The group’s first project for Kahraama was for the construction of the Duhail and Umm Qarn Reservoirs in 2009. A deal to build another two reservoirs near the town of Al Shahaniya was secured in 2010 and, in 2012, HLG secured the Al Kaaban reservoir and pipeline.

This latest contract brings HLG’s haul for 2014 to $2bn. Work is scheduled to start this month, and to complete in the third quarter of 2016.

Leighton’s chairman has recently left the company after a year in position. The company were also recently awarded contracts in Dubai and the Philippines.
