Studio Libeskind has unveiled designs for an art gallery in Lithuania’s capital Vilnius. The Modern Art Centre (MAC) will feature work by Lithuanian artists from the 1960s to the present day.
Libeskind will work in collaboration will Do architects and Baltic Engineers, both of whom are from Vilnius.
MAC will be an "expression of Vilnius past and present" and will be surrounded by a new public piazza and located next to Vilnius’ medieval city, which is a Unesco world heritage site.
The 3,100 square metre museum will contain more than 4,000 artworks, as well as educational areas and an auditorium.
The white concrete structure will be topped by a roof garden and will contain floor-to-ceiling windows to bring natural light to its interior.
Daniel Libeskind said: "MAC not only creates a home for this extraordinary collection, but the design connects the galleries to the street and the urban fabric, giving the citizens of Vilnius a cultural centre infused with public space."
The museum will be free to the public.
Construction is due to begin in 2017 and to complete in early 2019.
Studio Libeskind’s Freedom Pyramid was recently awarded planning permission in Jerusalem.
