Melbourne to get Beyoncé-inspired skyscraper

Melbourne, Australia looks set to get a skyscraper inspired by the curvaceous singer, Beyoncé.

Australian architecture firm Elenberg Fraser has won planning approval for the tower, which will be a mixed-use project at 134 Spencer Street.

Elenberg Fraser said the building’s complex form – a vertical cantilever – is a response to both science and art.

On the science side, the firm said the design "is actually the most effective way to redistribute the building’s mass, giving the best results in terms of structural dispersion, frequency oscillation and wind requirements".

But it also pays homage to "something more aesthetic", the firm said, mentioning the music video for Beyoncé’s song, Ghost, which features a woman dancing in a tube of thin fabric.

Elenberg Fraser designed the tower for Singapore-listed developer, Fragrance Group.

Urban Melbourne reported that the 284-metre tower was one of 2014’s biggest projects to seek planning permission in the city.

Among the consultants involved in the design, WSP provided structural and civil engineering.
