New South Wales fast tracks scheme for thousands of homes

The government of New South Wales has decided to expedite a residential development through the state’s Planning System Acceleration Programme, an initiative aimed at cutting procedures and reducing assessment time.

The Ivanhoe Estate in northwest Sydney will contain 3,300 homes, 950 of them earmarked for social housing, 128 affordable and 273 for seniors.

Rob Stokes, the minister for planning and public spaces, said: "By supercharging the planning system and getting Ivanhoe Estate out the door, we are injecting US$195m into the state’s economy and providing 572 jobs."

Melinda Pavey, NSW’s minister for water, property and housing, said: "The programme will deliver up to 23,500 new and replacement social and affordable homes and up to 40,000 private homes over the next 10 years across NSW.

"Now more than ever it is important to put a roof over the heads of the most vulnerable members of our communities – to create vibrant communities, not just buildings."

As well as the homes, Ivanhoe will contain a primary school and two childcare centres, as well as a town plaza. Construction will start in October.

  1. It’s good that there will be provision for social housing, low cost housing.
There needs to be greater community housing and spaces with good infrastructure- trains, bus etc. Developers need to be part of the projects.
