Number of US architects has grown 10% over past 10 years

The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) has announced that the number of licensed architects in the US rose to 113,554 in 2017, a 3% increase from 2016, and a 10% increase from 2008.

The increase is greater than the country’s population rise of 8%, with approximately one architect for every 2,900 people.

In 2017, a record high of over 5,200 candidates completed the education, experience, and examination requirements for licensure, suggesting to the NCARB that architecture "should benefit from a healthy pipeline in the coming years".

The survey revealed that there are more reciprocal, or out-of-state, licences than resident licenses issued across the US, indicating to the NCARB that "architects continue to have the mobility they need to seek work across state borders".
