Priority should be given to Qatari engineering firms, says council

Qatar’s Advisory Council has urged the government to give priority to Qatari engineering consultancies or, where it is necessary to appoint a foreign firm, to require it to partner with a local consultancy.

The advisory council, an appointed body that assists the emir in formulating policy, made the recommendation while debating amendments to the law that regulates the engineering profession.

The Peninsula newspaper reported that "marathon discussions" on the proposed amendments were held at three sessions of the council, one of which was attended by the Minister of Municipality and Urban Planning, H E Sheikh Abdul Rahman bin Khalifa Al Thani.

The council recommended that a nine-member committee be formed to classify engineers and firms and award licences to practise.
