Record January as solar power soars in Australia

Rooftop solar installations in Australia are booming, with more than 110MW of registrations completed in January – a 69% increase on the previous January.

Website Renew Economy called it "the best start to a year, nationally – ever".

According to latest data from industry analysts SunWiz, a total of 111MW of photovoltaics was registered in January 2018.

Capacity commissioned in 2017 currently stands at 1.207GW, according to the SunWiz report, with this expected to rise to over 1.25GW after the "lag" is absorbed – lag being the time it takes for registrations show up in data.

Solar installations were higher in December 2017, at just under 120MW, but the numbers for January puts the month at 69% ahead of the same time last year, and among the top five months ever, SunWiz said.

Growth has been particularly strong in the commercial solar sector, driven by a "fantastic performance" in the 75-100kW installation range, the report says.

The state of Victoria was the top location for commercial PV installations in January, though 80% of its registration was from 2017 installations.
