Documents released by Rio de Janeiro city council have revealed that more than 75% of the 2016 Olympic Games remain to be be completed, and that at least 15 venues have not reached the construction stage.
It has been reported in the Brazilian press that contractors have been hired without going through the usual bidding process to advance the delayed projects.
Many of the arenas used in the World Cup will be used again in the Olympics, such as the Maracanã stadium, which will host the opening and closing ceremonies, and the Barra Arena, which will host gymnastics.
There are also allegations of water pollution in the bay where sailing events will take place. Officials have said that recent tests have shown that the water meets international standards but athletes have said they sailed in debris such as a door, a sofa and a dead dog.
