Striking South African workers get 12% hike

18 September 2013

South African construction workers have ended a three week strike after reaching a wage hike deal with employers worth up to 12% over two years.

The agreement between the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the South African Federation of Civil Engineering Contractors (Safcec) ended a widespread strike that halted major construction projects.

The two-year wage agreement allows for a wage increase of 10% for employees in Task Grade 1 to 4 and 9% for employees in Task Grade 5 to 9.

Wages will go up again in March 2014 by up to 2.14% depending on the task grades.
