Sydney university plans Australia’s first indigenous residential university

The University of Technology Sydney (UTS) has announced plans to build "Australia’s first truly comprehensive indigenous residential college".

The site of the college has not been finalised, but UTS says it will be close to its Ultimo campus, in Sydney’s central business district.

The project is expected to cost around US$100m, with funding provided by the New South Wales Government and the Australian Labour Party.

The campus will have 250 students, most of whom will be indigenous, although there will also be places for non-indigenous students. They will study a syllabus that focuses on "indigenous cultures, perspectives, histories and peoples".

UTS says the interior and exterior designs will be "informed by indigenous designers with Indigenous culture and identity", and that the college will offer "indigenous students a complete pipeline of support – from aspirational initiatives in high school through to employment upon graduation".

The university has run a pilot programme over the past three years to provide guaranteed housing for indigenous applicants. It estimates that the indigenous college will be open to students by 2023.
