Symbion and GE join to build new power plant in Tanzania

11 July 2013

American firms Symbion and General Electric have teamed up with the Tanzania Electric Supply Company to build a 600MW gas-fired power plant and 650km transmission line.

The Mtwara plant is expected to ease power shortages in Tanzania and meet the growing demand for energy in the southern parts of the country.

Symbion Power CEO Paul Hinks said: "Symbion is here to support the country and the government and we have a very long term view about our business interests in Africa and in Tanzania."

Construction is due to commence next January and will be completed within three years.
