There is no time’ says India’s L&T in race to recruit engineers

25 February 2014

India’s Larsen & Toubro (L&T) is teaming up with the country’s top academic institutions in a drive to recruit more engineers as construction technology managers.

In a program called the Build India Scholarship (BIS), L&T sponsors engineering graduates interested in pursuing construction technology, and trains them to be construction technology managers capable of designing major construction works.

"We need to get the right set of people to become leaders immediately. We don’t have time," said SN Subrahmanyan, L&T’s senior vice president for infrastructure and construction, speaking to graduates about BIS, as reported in India’s The Hindu newspaper.

BIS has been operating for 15 years. Around 560 engineers have become construction technology managers in that time, with L&T absorbing most of them.

In its current drive L&T has partnered with technology institutes in Madras, Delhi, Trichy in Tamil Nadu and Suratkal in Karnataka.

"We are also talking to IIT Kharagpur, IIT Mumbai and Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi for the BIS program," said SN Subrahmanyan.

To students, reported The Hindu, he said: "You can even immediately lead a joint venture company. Don’t worry about the L&T rules. There is plenty of opportunity."

The BIS scholarship is a two-year full-time residential programme with four semesters offering insights on various subjects related to construction from industry experts and academics.
