Turkey secures record $31.3bn overseas construction projects

22 January 2014

The Turkish construction industry secured a record $31.3bn worth of overseas projects in 2013, an increase of $5.2bn compared to 2012, according to the Turkish government.

Turkish contractors secured 374 projects in 45 countries last year, economy minister Nihat Zeybekçi said.

Improved political relations with a number of countries, particularly in the Middle East, Africa and central Asian republics, is believed to be the reason for the boost.

"This is a record level and a historic success; we also secured construction projects in South Sudan and Senegal for the first time last year," the minister said.

Contractors won the most projects in Turkmenistan and Russia.

The majority of projects won were for the construction of housing, trade centers and government buildings worth $12.4bn while transportation projects comprised $10.3bn and industrial and energy facility projects made up $6.2bn.
