UK bridge engineer Mabey has worked with Puerto Rican firms Viatek and Construcciones José Carro to fix some of the damage that Hurricane Maria caused to the Caribbean island last year.
The 58m-long Rio Grande bridge, which was erected in only 19 days, links a rural community to an urban area in Arecibo, in northwest Puerto Rico.
The Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division commented: "Hurricane Maria caused catastrophic damage, resulting in numerous fatalities and devastating rural infrastructure. Electricity was cut, and many bridges collapsed, leaving communities totally inaccessible.
"This new bridge brings some normality back to the lives of local people, helping them to access fundamental services faster. It also allows local farmers to transport goods across the country, which is a critical part of a longer-term recovery."
