Vinci, Atkins, Mott MacDonald, CH2M and WSP among latest Crossrail 2 appointments

Transport for London (TfL) has announced the formation of four consultancy teams to develop planning and designs for its $30bn Crossrail 2 project, and to help to establish its business case. 

Six firms have been chosen to work on the engineering and technical side of the scheme. They are Vinci Construction, Arcadis Hyder, Weston Williamson, Interfleet, First Class Partnerships and Dr Sauer & Partners.

Design engineers CH2M Hill and Atkins will tackle strategic modelling, route development, planning, appraisal and evaluation: 

The sustainability consultants are Mott MacDonald, Temple Group, ERM and WSP.

Economic development and urban design contracts have gone to Aecom Weston Williamson, Turkington Martin.

The firm, which will join TfL’s Engineering and Project Management Framework, were selected following a competitive tendering process. 

Boris Johnson, the mayor of London, commented: "There is now real momentum behind Crossrail 2 and a growing sense that we can get it off the drawing board. We’re seeing strong recognition from the business community that this project could have major benefits for London, helping to boost rail capacity and the creation of new jobs and homes in the capital and beyond."

Crossrail 2 is being developed by TfL and Network Rail. If it gets the go-ahead, it will run from Hertfordshire to the north of London to Surrey in the south west. The central section of the scheme will require 36km of rail line, 13 underground stations and two overground stations. 

Further public consultations will take place before an application for powers to build the new railway is submitted in 2017. Work is expected to finish sometime after 2030.
