Zaha Hadid Architects to design philharmonic concert hall in the Urals

Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) has won a competition to design the Sverdlovsk Philharmonic Concert Hall in Yekaterinburg, Russia.

Forty-seven international teams submitted designs for the competition, which was organised by the Sverdlovsk Region’s Ministry of Construction to find a home for the Ural Philharmonic Orchestra.

The structure will contain a 1,600-seat concert hall and a 400-seat chamber music venue underneath a suspended canopy that is intended to resemble a sound wave. ZHA says the venues will appear to be "suspended within the canopy, appearing to float above the new civic plaza".

Christos Passas, ZHA project director, said: "Russia has been a formative influence on ZHA’s creative work. From very early in her career, Zaha was attracted to the Russian avant-garde who conceived civic spaces as urban condensers that catalyse a public realm of activity to enrich creativity and community. These principles are embedded within the design of the new Sverdlovsk Philharmonic Concert Hall."

ZHA worked with Moscow architect Speech, London structural engineer AKT II and Moscow landscape designer Arteza.
