Aecom has appointed Mark Southwell as chief executive of its global transportation business.

A civil engineer with more than 35 years experience, he joined Aecom in 2019 as managing director of transportation for Aecom in Europe. His responsibility later extended to India.

Before joining Aecom, he was a vice president at Jacobs where he led the rail and geotechnical unit of some 1,000 people working on major programmes including High Speed 2 and Crossrail (the Elizabeth Line) in the UK.

In March this year, Southwell became interim chief executive of Aecom’s global transportation business; his permanent appointment was announced yesterday.

He holds an MSc in project management from the University of Reading and a BSc in civil engineering from University College Swansea.

Aecom chief executive Troy Rudd said his appointment comes at a “critical moment with unprecedented global investment in transportation infrastructure”.
