A consortium of French engineer Alstom and Korean contractor Hyundai Engineering & Construction has signed a letter of intent with Iraq’s ministry of transport to create a framework for an elevated railway in Baghdad.
The 20km Baghdad Elevated Train (BET) contract includes 14 stations, rolling stock, electromechanical systems, track and associated civil works.
A 16km section will link Al-Khadumia and AlShab, with a 4km stretch running to AlEtafia AlMuthana airport.
Müslüm Yakisan, Alstom’s senior vice president for the region, said: "We are extremely delighted to sign the letter of intent and develop our cooperation with the Republic of Iraq.
"We believe that with this important project together with the Iraqi government we will implement our latest innovative technologies to improve the mobility environment in Baghdad and reduce the current traffic congestion."
