Arup designs pioneering cancer facility in Poland

The first proton cancer treatment facility in Poland has officially opened in Cracow.

The National Centre Hadron Radiotherapy (pictured) is the first of its type in the country and one of only a few in Europe.

UK consulting engineer Arup was responsible in the project from concept design to construction. It provided multidisciplinary services including the overall design of the Cyclotron’s concrete bunker and buildings, mechanical, electrical and public health engineering.

Proton beam treatment lowers the risk of radiation damage to healthy tissues compared with standard radiation treatment, thereby decreasing the effect of treatment on patients’ quality of life.
