Canadian engineer AtkinsRéalis has extended its partnership with Canadian robotics manufacturer Kinova for three more years.

The duo previously collaborated at the UK’s Sellafield nuclear site, where Kinova’s robotic arm performed an operation in a sealed enclosure – known as a remote glovebox operation (ARGO).

Two demonstration units have been operating at AtkinsRéalis’ Technology Center in Richland, US, and in Montreal, Canada.

They plan to test the Kinova’s Gen3 robotic arm for remote glovebox operations and decommissioning at other nuclear sites.

Christian Pilon, AtkinsRéalis’ head of nuclear robotics, said: “Robotic and automation technology is already improving safety and speed of delivery in the nuclear sector but the full extent of its potential is still to be realised.”
