Balfour Beatty awarded mixed-use development in Washington DC

JBG Companies, a privately owned real estate investment and management firm, has chosen Balfour Beatty to build its latest project in Washington DC’s U-Street corridor.

The 13|U mixed-use project will feature 129 residential units, 15,750 square feet of retail space near the Cardozo Metro station.

Balfour Beatty is providing construction manager services for the scheme and began demolition of the existing building last month.

The 13|U project aims to bring market-rate and affordable housing units to the area, which is a district in the north-west of the city best known as the centre of Washington’s music scene.

This is Balfour US’ fourth building for JBG in the corridor. Earlier this year it completed the Hatton and the Shay mixed-use developments, and handed over The Louis at 14th and U in 2014.

David Laib, senior vice president of Balfour Beatty US (pictured), said: "The revitalisation of the Shaw neighbourhood is exciting and indicative of a trend we’re seeing with our clients in major metropolitan areas around the country.

"Our team takes great pride in establishing long-term partnerships and we’re thrilled to continue our long relationships with JBG and the city."

Groundbreaking was held on 8 July.
