Balfour Beatty wins project to reinvent Texan landmark

Balfour Beatty US has been chosen to "transform" a public space in Austin, Texas by real estate firm Parkway Properties.

Balfour will work alongside landscape architecture DWG and the Michael Hsu Office of Architecture.

The Fareground at One Eleven Congress is the reimagination of the plaza and lobby space at One Congress Plaza in downtown Austin.

According to its developers, the Fareground will bring together a park and marketplace to turn the sunken plaza, and the internal lobby of One Congress Plaza, into a "modern, inviting and active downtown hub for professionals, residents and visitors".

During the pre-planning process, Balfour Beatty used laser scanning to measure the plaza and its five oak trees. This allowed the construction team to avoid clashes between the foliage and the plaza’s new "shade structures".

Kirk Benken, vice president of operations for Balfour Beatty in Austin, said: "Our extensive portfolio of interior construction in Austin’s central business district, especially our experience with complicated, commercial lobby renovations, made this project a great fit for our team’s expertise.

The project is already under way with completion expected in spring 2017.
