BAM builds “House of the Future”

Netherlands-headquartered Royal BAM Group has won the contract for the PPP project House of the Future in Berlin.

The project will be delivered by BAM’s German building company BAM Deutschland and its facility management subsidiary BAM Immobilien-Dienstleistungen.

It includes the development, construction and subsequent maintenance and operation for a period of 28 years. The contract value is approximately €58 million. The building will be completed by the end of 2016.

‘Das Haus der Zukunft’ (House of the Future) is located along the river Spree next to the Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), which was recently completed by BAM Deutschland, and in the immediate vicinity of the Berlin Central Station.

The building offers approximately 8,000 sq m of floor space for special exhibitions and events. The House of the Future is intended to motivate people to delve into scientific research and future-related issues.

The starting point for the tendering procedure of this PPP project was the winning design by the Berlin architect agency Richter Musikowski.

The design reflects the urban environment, is extremely energy and climate friendly and offers one large room without walls. Two large glass walls on both sides open up the building, offering visitors an impressive panoramic view over the city and the river Spree. The public can also access the roof or visit the restaurant and cafe.

The energy-efficient nature of the building includes solar, thermal and photovoltaic systems for power generation, plus storage of solar energy in batteries. Sustainability certification is pursued to a level comparable to the gold standard of the German evaluation system for Sustainable Building (BNB).
