Besix and Donati awarded Italian bridge and tunnel contract

A joint venture between Belgian contractor Besix and Italy’s Donati has been awarded an €80m contract by Italian state road operator Anas to improve connectivity and traffic flow between the cities of Perugia and Ancona on the Adriatic coast.

The Valfabbrica 2020 joint venture will add extra lanes to State Road 318 on a 3.1km stretch that includes the 1,545m Casa Castalda tunnel, the 874m Picchiarella tunnel, the Tre Vescovi viaduct and the Calvario bridge.

Jan Van Steirteghem, Besix Europe’s general manager, said: "Besix is particularly pleased to return to Italy, where we have already built several road projects in the course of our history, particularly in Lombardy and Sardinia.

"We also have a long-standing and excellent relationship with our partner Donati, with whom we are looking forward to carrying out this project."

Angelica Donati, Donati’s head of business development, said: "The Italian infrastructure sector is a key economic driver for the country, and it has gained even more importance as the economy tries to recover from the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

"Together with our long-standing partner Besix Group, we look forward to delivering this strategic infrastructure project which will help greatly improve road connectivity in central Italy."

The project will be carried out in seven phases over three-and-a-half years. The existing connecting road between Ancona and Perugia will remain in service for the duration of the work.
