Rebranded CH2M is over the Hill

The Colorado-based engineer CH2M Hill will shorten its name to just CH2M and "refresh" its brand and logo to reflect better its clients’ needs and its own plans for growth.

CH2M is owned by its employees, and in 2013 came sixth in Fortune magazine’s list of the 100 best companies to work for

Jacqueline Hinman (pictured), CH2M’s chairman and chief executive, said the time was right to make the move.

"The last time we rebranded was in the 1990s. Since that time, CH2M has grown from 5,000 to 25,000 employees, working in more than 50 countries, with annual revenues of almost $6bn. Our distinctive new look reflects the energy and passion of the firm and its zest for bringing the smartest approaches to the markets and industries we serve."

The name "CH2M" is derived from the surnames of the company’s four founders: Fred Merryfield, a professor of engineering at Oregon State University, and three of his students: Holly Cornell, James Howland, Thomas Burke Hayes. The four came together in 1946 to tackle local water challenges – as hinted at by the "H2" element of the name.

The "Hill" was tacked on after the company merged in 1971 with Clair Hill and Associates of California.

Since then CH2M has expanded into the design and management of a wide range of construction and civil engineering schemes, including railways, nuclear decommissioning, oil and gas production and the London Olympic Games and the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

The company is owned by its employees, and in 2013 came sixth in Fortune magazine’s list of the 100 best companies to work for. It has also been recognised for its efforts to attract and advance the careers of women, and was named one the world’s most ethical companies for four years running by the Ethisphere Institute.
