Editorial policy
Purpose
Construction Management (CM) magazine and Global Construction Review (GCR) are the official magazines for the Chartered Institute of Building. They exist to inform, challenge, and inspire readers by providing trusted journalism and a platform for thought leadership. CM and GCR reflect the values of the CIOB but operate with full editorial independence. All decisions on content, contributors, themes, and imagery are made by the editorial teams to ensure readers receive the highest quality publications possible.
Editorial independence
CM is committed to editorial freedom. While our coverage reflects CIOB’s values, the editorial team is entrusted to make final decisions on:
- The selection of contributors and subject matter.
- The balance of themes and perspectives.
- The use of imagery, multimedia, and supporting materials.
All contributions are subject to editing. This may include reducing the length of an article, rewriting or other modifications that the editor may deem necessary or appropriate. The editorial team also reserves the right not to use supplied imagery and may substitute with other visuals where appropriate. When a contributor sends imagery, multimedia, or other material to our editorial team, they confirm that they own the copyright or appropriate rights to use it. See our terms and conditions for further information.
Advertising bookings will not be made contingent on editorial coverage, nor will editorial be subject to advertiser influence. This independence ensures CM and GCR maintain credibility, integrity, and trust with its readers.
Diversity of voices
We are committed to showcasing a diverse range of voices from across the built environment. This includes contributors from different disciplines, backgrounds, and career stages. No single contributor or viewpoint will dominate coverage. Contributors are rotated to ensure readers benefit from fresh perspectives and a balanced reflection of the profession.
Contributor standards
All contributions must meet the following standards:
- Originality: Submissions must be the author’s own work and not previously published elsewhere. Passing off other people’s work or ideas as one’s own will not be accepted. Any contributions suspected of plagiarism will not be published. We use various tools to detect and identify plagiarism, combined with human review.
- Accuracy: Content must be factually correct, properly sourced, and substantiated where claims are made. Any claims about products or services complying with legislation, regulations, or standards must be clearly substantiated, along with links to the relevant legislation/regulations.
- Professional insight: Contributions should reflect the contributor’s expertise, offering clear professional perspective beyond generic commentary.
- Clarity: Authors should write with clarity and accessibility for our professional readership.
- Non-promotional: Articles must not be promotional in nature. Sales or marketing content will be removed.
Contributors may request to review their contribution before publication, but this request should be made before the editor agrees to the contribution. Any such review must be completed within the timeframe set by the editorial team. Only factual errors will be amended, and contributors have no right of veto.
We reserve the right to publish all submitted content in Construction Management and Global Construction Review.
Use of AI
CM and GCR recognise that artificial intelligence (AI) can support the creative process but must never replace professional expertise. Our standards are:
- No AI-written articles: We will not accept content written predominantly by AI with little or no editing, fact-checking, or original insight from the contributor.
- Permitted support: AI may be used responsibly for research, transcription, grammar, or clarity of expression (particularly where English is a second language). Any AI-assisted content must be reviewed and fact-checked by the contributor. Sources must be cited.
- Disclosure: Contributors must indicate if AI tools were used to support their submission.
- AI imagery: AI-generated images or multimedia are accepted only if clearly captioned as AI-generated. Contributors must hold rights to use any source material.
- Detection: CM employs tools and human review to identify AI-generated content. Any article flagged as predominantly AI-generated will be rejected. Previously published AI-generated content may be removed retroactively.
Quality and reputation
The editorial team reserves the right to reject any contribution that risks spreading misinformation. Does not meet our professional standards. And/or conflicts with CIOB values or damage the reputation of CM/GCR or CIOB.
Final note
CM and GCR welcome contributions from across the industry. We believe that high-quality, evidence-based, and diverse perspectives enrich our profession. The editorial team is entrusted to ensure every issue reflects those principles while maintaining the highest journalistic standards.
