French engineer Egis has been hired by Qatar’s transport ministry to draw up a masterplan for the country’s public transport system.

Egis says the Qatar Public Transport Masterplan will “bypass conventional frameworks” to deal with the issues of congestion, car-dependence and environmental impacts.

It hopes to offset the effects of Qatar’s rapid urban growth with green commitments and is designed to help policy-makers, government officials, developers, investors, consultants, engineers and planners.

The plan, which will be developed over two-and-a-half years, will contain frameworks and guidelines for effective planning, design, implementation, and the operation of public transit services. It will offer “prescriptive” policies, laws and regulations backed up by a monitoring scheme.

The ultimate aim of the plan is to improve the population’s health, wealth and smart transit options.

Muhammad Mustafa, Egis’ director of mobility and planning in the Middle East and South Asia, said: “We aim to create integrated networks that bridge people, places, and possibilities while serving as the backbone of sustainable growth and societal advancement.

“Our team’s legacy spans the entire lifecycle of transport innovation – from ideation to operational excellence – therefore, we are more than ready to deliver transport infrastructure solutions rooted in precision and scalability.”
