Grimshaw to design three new stations in Australia

The Australian state of Victoria has announced that it will build three "state-of-the-art" stations at Marymede, Mernda and Hawkstowe as part of the Mernda Rail Extension Project.

Mernda is a suburb of Melbourne, 27km north-east of Melbourne’s central business district.

The UK’s Grimshaw Architects has been selected to design the new stations along the rail corridor and will work with Australian contractor John Holland, who will construct the project.

The Mernda Rail Extension project will bring rail travel to thousands of suburban residents for the first time.

Neil Stonell, Grimshaw Partner, said the scheme would "help to improve people’s lives, and connect one of Victoria’s fastest growing communities to employment, education and other vital opportunities".

Construction will begin this year, with trains due to be running on the new line by 2019.
