Hassell and OMA unveil their “multidimensional” museum for Western Australia

Australian design firms Hassell has joined with Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas’ Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) to design and build the "New Museum for WA".

Located in the heart of Perth’s cultural precinct, the 21,500 sq m museum is described by Hassell as a "collection of physical and virtual ‘stories’, providing a multidimensional framework for visitors to engage with the Western Australian people and places".

The design is based on the intersection of a horizontal and vertical loop with space for both temporary and fixed exhibitions.

Among the permanent exhibits is the "much-loved blue whale skeleton".

The museum will host a diverse range of cultural, retail and dining experiences, increasing visitor numbers especially after hours.

The contractor for the job is Brookfield Multiplex and the Western Australian government

The museum is due to be completed in 2020.
