A joint venture of Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) and Tata Projects has won a $259m (21.9 billion rupees) contract to build a section of a new metro system for the city of Indore, in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

HCC said it holds a 55% share in the joint venture, equal to around $142.6m (12.05 billion rupees).

The Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation is developing its 32km Yellow Line with 28 stations for the city of around 2 million people.

Most of the line will be elevated.

The Rail Corporation hired HCC and Tata to build the line’s only underground section, an 8.65km route with seven stops between Indore’s international airport and the city’s main rail station.

The JV will tunnel 11.32km in all, including legs beyond the airport and beyond the rail station.

Elsewhere, HCC is engaged in building 4km of twin tunnels and four stations for Mumbai Metro’s Line III, as well as two Chennai Metro packages.
