Hong Kong’s Civil Engineering & Development Department has invited tenders for phase two of the development on the closed Kai Tak airport on Hong Kong’s south east coast.Â
The contracts cover the second stage of works in developing the southern part of the former runway, which will be supervised by Aecom Asia. The works involve building 2.3km of roads, a vehicular underpass, footpaths, and roadside noise barriers of around 1,100m, which will be integrated with the landscaped deck structure and with provision for pedestrian crossings.Â
Work on this phase is due to start next year, while the project is expected to be finished between the end of 2017 and the first quarter of 2019.Â
The airport at Kai Tak was relocated to Chek Lap Kok in July 1998. Since then, Hong Kong’s development department has been moving forward with major plans to redevelop the area. Last June, a cruise ship terminal opened on the tip of the former runway.
