South Korea’s Hyundai Construction Equipment has opened its new “mother plant” in Dong-gu, Ulsan after a $150m modernisation.

The new factory combines two existing plants into one 235,000-sq-m facility that will boost Hyundai’s production of medium-to-large excavators and wheel loaders by 56% to 15,000 units a year.

Hyundais says it will be the “mother plant”, acting as the global production hub for its subsidiaries.

It will have welding robots and an AI quality inspection system, which the company says will increase productivity by 20% and reduce production time by 35%.

A real-time product tracking system will monitor workflow, while vision sensors and driverless vehicles on the body-welding production line will improve quality and efficiency.

Kwon Oh-gap, Hyundai HD’s chairman, said: “The new factory, transformed with a smart and safe production system, aims to become the world’s leading production hub, integrating advanced technology and environmental sustainability.”
